Integrated Science is a core subject taught at both Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) levels in Ghana.
It brings together key concepts from Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science into a single, practical course
designed to make science relevant and applicable to everyday life.
The primary aim of Integrated Science is to:
·
Develop students' scientific knowledge and curiosity
·
Foster critical
thinking, problem-solving,
and inquiry-based learning
·
Build awareness of health, environmental sustainability, and technology
·
Prepare students for further education and
careers in science and technology
At the JHS level, students are introduced to
foundational science concepts with a strong link to their daily environment.
Topics include:
·
Diversity
of Living Things
·
Materials
and Their Properties
·
Energy,
Force, and Motion
·
The Earth
and the Solar System
·
Environment
and Sanitation
·
Human
Health and Reproduction
The curriculum encourages hands-on learning, basic experiments,
and practical application of scientific ideas in agriculture, hygiene, and
environmental protection.
In SHS, Integrated Science becomes more
detailed and academically rigorous, providing students with a strong base for
science-related WASSCE subjects and future studies. Key topics include:
·
Cells,
Systems of the Body, and Genetics (Biology)
·
Chemical
Reactions, Acids, Bases, and Elements (Chemistry)
·
Motion,
Forces, Electricity, and Magnetism (Physics)
·
Climate,
Ecosystems, and Agriculture (Earth Science)
Practical work, lab-based assessments, and
real-life application are essential components at this level.
Integrated Science is assessed through:
·
Classroom
exercises and tests
·
Practical
and project-based assessments
·
National
examinations
o BECE at the JHS level
o WASSCE at the SHS level
